Working Toward Equity
Culture is a powerful force. It shapes nearly every aspect of our social lives, from the clothes we wear to the values we hold. Culture is so entrenched in our worlds that we may not even notice it. The United States is home to many cultures, but it is typically the dominant European American culture that is seen and supported as the “norm.”
Ethnic studies aims to counter some of the dominant narrative by highlighting the perspectives, histories, and cultures of marginalized communities. It seeks to engage students with culturally responsive and inclusive curriculum. Through ethnic studies, students learn to identify times that some cultural groups have been (and continue to be) privileged over others, and to participate in the dismantling of that privilege.
At Gibbs Smith Education, we’re dedicated to creating resources that help every student feel seen and valued.
